In this paper we attempt to show that there are distinct geographical differences in the preferred style of higher education (HE) in further education (FE) partnerships. Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) data relating to direct and indirect/collaborative funding have been used to identify three discrete categories of funding HE in FE: indirect/collaborative, direct and mixed economy. These same data have been used to generate three maps which portray a regional/subregional perspective on funding HE in FE. We put forward the suggestion that policy debates on direct and indirect/collaborative funding of HE in FE should not only consider political and academic issues: they should also take into account the geographic characteristics of the region/subregion.

Franchising has been defined in the following way: a franchised course is a whole course, or a whole stage of a course, designed in one institution, and delivered in, and by the staff of, another institution. This report contains presentations given at a seminar for principals of colleges which was held at the Staff College in 1991. The papers describe franchising negotiations and arrangements in a variety of educational institutions, ranging from the setting up of a university centre at a community college in Minnesota to schools in a London borough offering Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) courses. The contributors describe the reasons for embarking on franchising schemes, the arrangement and structure of their schemes, the benefits and disadvantages, the outcomes so far and the further developments they are anticipating.
